L — LAND IN PRESENCE: Serotonin Depletion Isn’t Where You Think
Let me start with what changes everything: Serotonin is mainly produced in the gut, not the brain.
Research in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology (2023) confirms that approximately 90% of your body’s serotonin is made in your gut.
These cells require specific bacteria, nutrients, and a healthy gut lining to produce serotonin.
Gut inflammation from stress, poor diet, antibiotics, or illness lowers serotonin levels. Disruptions in the microbiome reduce beneficial bacteria involved in serotonin production, while a damaged intestinal lining hampers absorption of key nutrients needed to make serotonin.
And beyond the physical level, your energetic body plays a role. This is at the heart of my cellular healing approach. When we restore the gut-brain-energy connection, the body’s blueprint of health can finally express itself.”
Your throat chakra (communication, expression, authentic voice) and solar plexus chakra (power, boundaries, digestion) directly influence serotonin regulation. When these energy centres are blocked, contracted, or depleted, your body’s capacity to produce and utilise serotonin becomes reduced at an energetic level.
This is why addressing serotonin depletion requires healing your gut, supporting your hormone production, AND clearing the energetic blocks preventing flow.
I — ILLUMINATE THE PATTERN: The Three-Part Serotonin Depletion Problem
Here’s what most people miss about low serotonin:
It’s rarely just one problem. It’s usually three interconnected issues.
1. Gut Dysfunction Preventing Production
Your gut cannot produce serotonin when it’s inflamed, when beneficial bacteria are depleted, or when nutrient absorption is compromised. Chronic stress, processed foods, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, alcohol, and gut infections all damage the cells responsible for serotonin synthesis.
Additionally, leaky gut allows inflammatory compounds into your bloodstream, depleting existing serotonin and interfering with its function in the brain. Read more about the gut-brain connection.
Dopamine is often depleted alongside serotonin in the exhausted nervous system. The two neurotransmitters work together, and restoring one without addressing the other leaves the picture incomplete. You can read more about dopamine depletion and how to restore motivation naturally here.
2. Nutrient Deficiencies Blocking Synthesis
Serotonin production requires specific building blocks: tryptophan (an amino acid from protein), vitamin B6 (converts tryptophan to serotonin), folate and B12 (methylation support), magnesium (cofactor for conversion), and omega-3 fatty acids (support receptor function). When you’re deficient in any of these, serotonin production stalls regardless of gut health.
Chronic stress depletes these nutrients faster than diet alone can replenish them.
3. Energetic Blockages Disrupting Flow
Your throat chakra (located at the base of your throat) governs self-expression, speaking truth, and authentic communication.
When blocked by years of swallowing your words, suppressing emotions, or not being heard, it disrupts the energetic flow, affecting serotonin regulation.
Your solar plexus chakra (located just below your ribcage) governs personal power, boundaries, and digestion. When blocked by absorbed emotions, poor boundaries, or feeling powerless, it creates both digestive dysfunction (preventing serotonin production) and energetic depletion (affecting mood and vitality).
The truth is: serotonin depletion is your body telling you that something is wrong at the gut level, the nutritional level, and the energetic level.
And until all three are addressed, your serotonin will remain depleted no matter how many antidepressants you take.
G — GUIDE THE UPGRADE: What Actually Restores Serotonin
So what works?
Restoring serotonin naturally requires a three-part approach.
Here’s what your body needs:
Heal Your Gut
Your gut lining needs repair to restore serotonin-producing cells. Remove inflammatory foods (gluten, dairy, sugar, alcohol) for 2- 3 weeks. Add gut-healing foods: bone broth (provides collagen and glutamine), fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir for beneficial bacteria), and anti-inflammatory herbs (turmeric, ginger).
Consider L-glutamine supplementation to accelerate gut lining repair. Restore your microbiome with a quality probiotic containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains shown to support serotonin production.
Provide Serotonin Building Blocks
Your body needs the raw materials to make serotonin. Eat tryptophan-rich foods: turkey, chicken, eggs, pumpkin seeds, wild salmon, oats. Ensure adequate B vitamins through leafy greens, legumes, or a quality B-complex supplement.
Get magnesium from pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, spinach, or magnesium glycinate supplementation. Consider 5-HTP supplementation (50-100mg daily) as a direct serotonin precursor, especially if dietary tryptophan is insufficient.
Clear Energetic Blocks
Your throat chakra needs activation through speaking your truth, humming or singing (vibrates the throat), wearing blue (throat chakra colour), and practices that encourage authentic self-expression.
Your solar plexus chakra needs strengthening through boundary-setting, core-strengthening exercises, yellow foods (such as lemon, turmeric, and bananas), and solar plexus visualisation (a golden sun radiating from your core). Both chakras benefit from breathwork, energy healing, and releasing patterns of suppression or powerlessness.
This is where energy alchemy works at its deepest level. Transforming the stuck emotional and energetic patterns that keep the body in depletion.”
Support Nervous System Regulation
Chronic stress depletes serotonin faster than you can produce it. Daily practices that activate your parasympathetic nervous system (rest-and-digest) support serotonin: gentle yoga, walking in nature, deep breathing, meditation, adequate sleep (7-9 hours), and reducing stimulants (caffeine, screens before bed).
The key is simultaneity. Healing your gut without providing nutrients means limited serotonin production. Providing nutrients without clearing energetic blocks prevents serotonin from flowing properly. Clearing chakras without healing gut inflammation means the physical foundation remains compromised.
H — HARMONISE WITH PRACTICE: Your Serotonin-Boosting Protocol
If you’re experiencing low serotonin, try this 4-week plan:
Week 1: Gut Reset
Eliminate gluten, dairy, sugar, and alcohol. Add bone broth daily (1 cup), fermented foods with each meal (2-3 tablespoons), and a quality probiotic. Notice if mood, sleep, or digestion shifts.

Week 2: Add Nutrients
Continue gut healing while adding serotonin precursors: tryptophan-rich breakfast (eggs, turkey, or oats), magnesium supplement before bed (300-400mg glycinate), B-complex in the morning. Track mood and energy changes.
Week 3: Activate Chakras
Continue gut + nutrients while adding energetic practices: 5 minutes daily humming (throat chakra), 5 minutes visualising a golden sun in the solar plexus, and practice speaking one truth you’ve been holding back (even if just to yourself).
Week 4: Integrate & Assess
Continue all practices. Notice: Is your mood more stable? Are you sleeping better? Do you experience moments of joy more easily? Is your digestion improving? Are you speaking your truth more freely?
Most people notice initial mood improvements within 2-4 weeks when addressing all three levels. Deep restoration typically requires 3-6 months of consistent support as your gut heals, nutrient stores replenish, and energetic pathways clear.
