Friday the 13th: Reclaiming What Was Taken From Women Who Knew Too Much

Issue: You flinch at Friday the 13th. You call it superstition. But something deeper stirs on this day. A low-grade unease that has nothing to do with black cats and everything to do with what was done to women who carried gifts like yours.

Problem: Friday the 13th was deliberately reframed by the patriarchy to suppress the sacred feminine. The number 13 corresponds to the 13 lunar cycles, the rhythm of women’s bodies and nature itself. The fear that clings to this day is not random superstition. It is a vibrational imprint of persecution, passed through the generations and stored in the nervous system and bloodline of women who sense, feel, and know.

Solution: Reclaiming Friday the 13th as a sacred day of the divine feminine is not just symbolic. It is an act of nervous system reprogramming, ancestral clearing, and the conscious restoration of gifts that were suppressed across generations.

Key insight: The fear of Friday the 13th is not yours. It was placed there. And what was placed there can be lifted.

Section 1: The night I understood what this day really means

On the opening night of Wicked, the musical, people were dressed in their favourite characters’ colours. I was captivated by the sea of green, an allegiance to Elphaba, the so-called wicked witch, and masses of rose pink for Glinda, the good witch. I wore green. Of course I did.

The story’s themes stopped me: developing hidden gifts, being alienated and ridiculed for them, trusting the wrong people, betrayal, and finding inner power when you need it most. If you are a healer, an intuitive, a medicine woman in the making, you recognise this story. You may have lived it.

It reminded me of how Friday the 13th has been twisted for centuries by the patriarchy to suppress women and their gifts. And how we all still carry the vibrational imprint of those times, passed through the generations and stored in the bloodline and the nervous system.

But those imprints can be cleared. And this day can be reclaimed.

Section 2: What Friday the 13th actually is

Friday the 13th is often shrouded in superstition and fear. But it’s true essence is something quite different.

In ancient cultures across the world, the number 13 was sacred. It corresponds to the 13 lunar cycles of the year. The same rhythm that governs women’s menstrual cycles, the tides, and the planting seasons. Friday itself was named for Freya (Norse) and Venus (Roman) both goddesses of love, fertility, and feminine power. Friday the 13th was originally a day to honour the divine feminine.

So what happened?

The patriarchal structures that sought to control women’s bodies, knowledge, and spiritual authority deliberately reframed this day as unlucky, dangerous, and cursed. The women who gathered herbs, who read the moon’s cycles, who healed with their hands and their knowing — they were the ones called witches. And the day that honoured their gifts was turned into a day of fear.

This was not accidental. It was strategic. And the effects are still measurable, not in superstition, but in the nervous system patterns of women alive today.

Section 3: Where this fear lives in the body

The fear of Friday the 13th is not intellectual. Most women will tell you they do not really believe in the superstition. And yet something tightens and contracts. A low-grade unease that does not match the rational mind.

This is because the fear is not stored in the mind. It is stored in the body.

Research on transgenerational epigenetic inheritance confirms that the physiological effects of trauma, including persecution, silencing, and the suppression of gifts, can be passed through the generations via changes in gene expression. The descendants of traumatised populations show measurable differences in cortisol response, immune function, and nervous system baseline. Even when they have no conscious memory of the original events.

For women who carry healing gifts, intuitive knowing, or shamanic sensitivity, the Friday the 13th response is not superstition. It is the nervous system remembering something the conscious mind has never been told: that there was a time when being a woman who knew too much was genuinely dangerous. And the body has not yet received the message that the danger is over.

This is the witch wound. The ancestral memory of what happened to women who were too visible, too knowing, too powerful. It lives in the throat that tightens before speaking. In the chest that contracts before being seen. In the stomach that knots before stepping into leadership. And it surfaces, often without explanation, on the very day that was once sacred to the gifts it tried to suppress.

Section 4: What reclamation actually looks like

Reclaiming Friday the 13th is not about wearing a slogan or posting a meme. It is a nervous system act. It is telling the body, through conscious ceremony and ancestral clearing, that the original threat is over, and that the gifts it tried to hide are now safe to express.

Here is a simple reclamation practice you can return to every Friday the 13th:

Morning acknowledgement

Before your day begins, stand quietly and place one hand on your heart and one on your belly. Take three slow breaths. Then say aloud:

I honour the women in my lineage who were silenced for their knowing.
I ‘ll honour the healers, the herbalists, the dreamers, and the medicine women who came before me.
What was taken from them, I reclaim today.
Their gifts live in me. And I will not hide them.

Allow your body to hear those words. You may feel emotion rise. Let it move. This is ancestral clearing in its simplest and most potent form.

Daytime visibility practice

On Friday the 13th, choose one act of deliberate visibility. Post the thing you have been holding back. Speak the truth you have been softening. Offer the gift you have been qualifying with disclaimers. Let this day become the day you practice being seen, consciously, intentionally, and in direct defiance of the suppression that made this day feared in the first place.

Evening ceremony

Light a candle at dusk. Sit with it for a few minutes. Write on a small piece of paper the fear or inherited pattern you are ready to release. The people-pleasing, the hiding, the good girl pattern that keeps your gifts small and your body exhausted. Burn the paper safely. As the flame takes it, say:

This pattern ends with me. What was suppressed is now expressed. What was feared is now sacred.

Place the ashes in the earth.

Section 5: The divine feminine is not decorative

The women who were burned, silenced, and exiled for their gifts did not disappear. They went underground. Into the bloodline, the cellular memory, and into the nervous system patterns of their daughters and granddaughters. Every Friday the 13th is an invitation to bring them back above ground. To let their medicine live in the open again.”
Mariangela Parodi, Naturopath and Energy Healer

The reclamation of Friday the 13th is not a spiritual nicety. It is an act of energy alchemy, transmuting centuries of suppression into sovereignty. It is an act of cellular healing, rewriting the epigenetic blueprint that has been carrying persecution as if it were still present. And it is an act of nervous system restoration, teaching the body that visibility, knowing, and feminine power are no longer threats to survival.

Friday the 13th comes several times each year. Each one is an opportunity to go a little deeper into this reclamation. To release another layer, and speak a little louder. Let the gifts that have been hiding in the shadows finally step into the light.

Are you on the healing path?

If you are a healer, a medicine woman, an intuitive who has always known she was carrying something older than her own experience — this post on the medicine woman path speaks directly to you. And the Chiron in Taurus transit that has just begun offers an eight-year window to restore trust in the body’s knowing, including the knowing that was taken from us on this very day.

If you are ready to clear the ancestral patterns of suppression held in your nervous system and reclaim the gifts your lineage has been waiting for you to express, I would love to support you.
