Vitality, Value and Visibility: Healing the Fear of Being Seen
Issue: You have gifts, wisdom, and a genuine calling to contribute, but something keeps pulling you back from being fully seen. You dim yourself before others can dim you first.
Problem: The fear of visibility is not a mindset problem or a confidence gap. It is a nervous system pattern. Often ancestrally inherited, that has learned that being fully seen is dangerous. When this pattern runs, vitality is depleted, value is undercharged, and visibility remains just out of reach no matter how much inner work is done.
Solution: Healing the fear of being seen requires working on three levels. The physical body through throat chakra restoration and nervous system safety. The emotional body through releasing the witch wound and inherited persecution patterns. The energy field through conscious ceremony and ancestral clearing.
Key insight: You were not born afraid to be seen. You learned it was safer to be invisible. And what was learned can be unlearned, one courageous act of visibility at a time.
My Visibility Story
My greatest fear was speaking.
Not just public speaking — any speaking. Being called on in class or noticed in a room. Drawing attention to myself in any way.
I grew up with a father of Italian heritage whose emotional intensity filled every corner of the home. He was volatile in unpredictable ways. Some days were fine. Others were not. I never knew which one I was walking into. So I learned to read the room before I entered it. I learned to monitor his moods, to stay quiet, to make myself small. Stayed in my room and tried not to make mistakes, because mistakes meant attention, and attention felt dangerous.
My stomach was in knots. Always.
And then there was school. English was not my first language, coming from a Chilean family in Australia. When the teacher called on me to read aloud, the words would jumble before I could reach them. My legs would shake. My whole body would shake. I felt so exposed, as though being seen by a roomful of eyes was a threat my nervous system had no framework to survive.
For decades I carried this. And when I began building my practice and realised I would need to speak, and record videos, to run classes, deliver content in front of a room — I felt it all over again. My first videos were genuinely terrible. Running classes was the most exhausting thing I had ever done, not because of the content but because of the threat my body felt from having all those eyes on me.
And then something shifted.
I began to understand that the fear did not start with me. It did not even start with my father.
Cultural Fear
I am Chilean. My family lived through the Allende years in the 1970s, and then through Pinochet. In that Chile, being seen was not uncomfortable. It was dangerous. You did not draw attention to yourself, and did not speak your truth publicly. But stayed quiet and invisible because your life depended on it.
That terror is not a story my mind remembers. It is a pattern my body inherited, encoded in my cells, stored in my nervous system, passed through the lineage without a word being spoken about it. And it ran in me for years as a fear of public speaking, a shaking body, a voice that disappeared when eyes turned toward me.
When I finally understood the ancestral root of it, something released that no amount of practice or willpower had been able to touch. The body finally had an explanation. And with explanation came compassion. And with compassion came the capacity to do the very thing the lineage had been afraid of, speak, be seen, and not be destroyed by it.
Now I have appeared on ABC Radio. I was named an ATMS Legend and run courses and hold space for rooms of women. Plus, I record transmissions that reach people I have never met.
My deepest fear became my greatest gift.
And that is exactly what this post is about.
If you recognise the eggshells, the knotted stomach, the body that learned to make itself small to stay safe? The Good Girl Pattern and Autoimmune Disease post explores what that adaptation costs the immune system over time, and how to begin healing it at the root.
SECTION 1: The numbers behind the pattern
Women are starting businesses at historic rates. In 2024, women launched 49% of all new businesses in the United States, up from just 29% in 2019, according to Gusto’s 2025 New Business Formation Report. Globally, 231 million women are engaged in entrepreneurship. The drive is clearly there.
And yet the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor 2024-2025 Women’s Entrepreneurship Report — drawing on data from 161,528 adults across 51 countries, found that 76% of experts still rated social support for women entrepreneurs as unsatisfactory. Women were 47% more likely than men to close a business for family or personal reasons. And fear of failure remains a significant barrier. In the UK, 63% of women who saw good opportunities would still not start a business due to fear of failure, compared to 44% of men.
Fear of failure and fear of visibility are not the same thing. But they often live in the same body. And Forbes research published in August 2025 identified something striking: daughters are more likely to become entrepreneurs only when their mother is visible and entrepreneurial, not their father. Visibility is not just personal. It is generational. When you show up fully, you change what your daughters and the women around you believe is possible for them.
SECTION 2: The fear of being seen- where it actually lives
The fear of visibility is not located in your mindset. It is located in your nervous system.
Somewhere along the way, in childhood, a relationship, family system, or in the inherited memory of your ancestral lineage — you learned that being fully seen was not safe. That standing out invited criticism. That having opinions caused conflict. That expressing your gifts might cost you love, belonging, or safety.
The nervous system, which is designed above all else to protect you, filed this information carefully. And then it began making decisions on your behalf. Pulling you back from the post, quieting your voice before you raised it, flooding you with doubt the moment you moved toward visibility. Not to sabotage you, to protect you. From a threat that may no longer exist, but that the body has never been told is over.
This is why affirmations and mindset work alone do not shift this pattern. You cannot think your way out of a nervous system response. The body needs something different — safety, not strategy.
SECTION 3: The witch wound and the throat chakra
There is a collective layer to the fear of being seen that lives in the bodies of women who are healers, intuitives, empaths, and sensitives in particular.
I call it the witch wound. The ancestral memory of what happened to women who were too visible, too knowing, too powerfully themselves. Women who collected herbs, talked to plants and animals, dreamed true things, let healing move through their hands. Women who were punished, silenced, or persecuted for the very gifts that now live in you.
These memories do not always surface as conscious thought. More often they live in the body. As a chronic tightening in the throat, a tendency toward tonsillitis and chest infections when speaking up feels dangerous, a contraction in the upper chest when you move toward greater visibility. The body remembers what the mind has forgotten.
The throat chakra: the energy centre governing authentic expression, truth, and the right to be heard, carries this wound most directly. When it is constricted, the voice stays small even when the heart is full. When it is restored, speaking your truth no longer triggers a threat response. The body learns, at last, that it is safe to be heard.
SECTION 4: What I have witnessed in practice
“Every woman I have worked with who has healed her fear of visibility has gone through the same threshold. Not a moment of sudden confidence, but a moment of deciding that her gifts matter more than her safety from judgment. The nervous system does not release the pattern until it feels safe enough to. Our work together is creating that safety — in the body first, then in the world.”
— Mariangela Parodi, Naturopath and Energy Healer
SECTION 5: Vitality, Value and Visibility — the three that move together
These three words are not separate themes. They are one connected pattern and when one shifts, the others shift with it.
Vitality depletes when you are constantly editing yourself. The energy it takes to monitor what you say, shrink what you express, and manage how you are perceived is enormous, and it comes directly from the body’s reserves. The women I work with who are most chronically exhausted are often the most chronically self-monitoring. Their nervous system is doing two jobs simultaneously: managing the outer world and managing how much of themselves is safe to show.
When the fear of visibility begins to lift, vitality returns. Not because life gets easier, but because the constant inner surveillance stops. The energy that was spent on self-management becomes available for self-expression. And self-expression, as it turns out, is one of the most energising experiences available to the human system.
Value — what you charge, what you ask for, what you believe your gifts are worth, is directly tied to the fear of being seen. When it is not safe to be seen, it is not safe to be fully valued either. Visibility and receiving go together. This is the same pattern explored in the Chiron in Taurus post — the restoration of the body’s capacity to receive what it actually deserves.
When women undercharge or give endlessly without receiving, it is rarely about not knowing their worth intellectually. It is about a nervous system that has learned receiving is dangerous, because receiving requires being seen as someone who deserves it.
Visibility is the outer expression of both. When vitality is restored and value is reclaimed, visibility becomes a natural consequence rather than a forced act. You do not have to push yourself to show up. You simply stop pulling yourself back.
SECTION 6: The Sacred Scars as Medicine
Here is what I have witnessed consistently across thirty years of practice: the women who have healed the deepest wounds around visibility go on to hold the most profound space for others.
The sensitivity that made you a target as a child becomes the attunement that makes you an extraordinary healer. The knowing that had to be hidden becomes the wisdom your clients travel to find. The voice that was silenced becomes the one that speaks the truth others cannot yet say for themselves.
This is the sacred scar principle — the wound that is not merely healed, but integrated, becomes the most potent medicine you carry. If this resonates deeply, Your Sacred Scars — the 12-week journey was created for exactly this work.
SECTION 7: Practices for restoring vitality, value and visibility
Throat chakra toning
Humming is one of the simplest and most direct nervous system tools available. It activates the vagus nerve through vibration, sending parasympathetic signals through the throat and into the chest. Hum any note you find comfortable for two to three minutes each morning before speaking. Over time this practice literally rewires the nervous system’s response to using your voice. This is vagal tone training.
The visibility commitment practice
Once each week, do one thing that makes you visible in a way that your nervous system resists. Post the thing you wrote and then unpublished. Share the opinion you held back. Offer the service you have been quietly waiting to launch. Not to push yourself into discomfort for its own sake, but to give your nervous system a new balance point — that visibility did not destroy you. Repeated enough times, this experience accumulates into a new baseline of safety.
Ancestral clearing for the visibility wound
Light a candle. Place one hand on your throat and one on your heart. Take three slow breaths. Then say aloud:
“I honour the women in my lineage who could not be seen. I release the agreement that invisibility keeps me safe. I allow my gifts to be visible, valued and received.”
Sit quietly for a few minutes. Notice what arises in your body without judgment. This is the beginning of energetic release.
Working with the energy alchemy of self-expression
Creative expression in any form — writing, painting, singing, cooking, gardening, activates the throat chakra and the Shen, the heart-spirit described in Chinese medicine as the source of all authentic self-expression. Regular creative practice is not a nice-to-have for the woman healing the fear of visibility. It is medicine, it teaches the body that expression is safe, pleasurable, and sustainable.
Receive the ancestral clearing work
If the witch wound resonates, working with your ancestral lineage directly is one of the most powerful ways to release the pattern at its deepest root. Communicating with your ancestors creates a conscious alliance with the lineage. Honouring what was suffered, releasing what was never yours to carry forward, and reclaiming the gifts that were suppressed.
SECTION 8: Are you a modern day medicine woman?
The women who are most called to heal the fear of visibility are often the ones the world most needs to see.
If you recognise yourself in everything written here? The sensitivity, the gifts that do not fit conventional frameworks, the knowing that runs deeper than your credentials, and the feeling that you are meant to be doing something more, but something keeps pulling you back? I invite you to read Are You a Modern Day Medicine Woman?
Your gifts were not given to you to be kept private. They were given to you to be shared. The world does not need another version of you that is small enough to be comfortable. It needs the whole of you.
