What Science Now Confirms About Ancestral Trauma

For a long time, the idea that our ancestors’ experiences could live in our bodies was considered spiritual territory, the area of shamans, healers, and energy medicine practitioners. Science is now catching up.

Researchers have discovered that trauma does not stay only with the person who experienced it. The effects of deeply stressful events, war, famine, persecution, loss, can be passed down through the generations that follow. Not through stories or learned behaviour alone, but through biology. Through changes in how your genes are expressed.

This process is called epigenetic inheritance. Think of it this way: your DNA is like a piano. Epigenetics determines which keys get played. When a parent or grandparent experiences severe stress or trauma, it can change which keys their body plays. Those changes can be passed to their children and grandchildren, even if those descendants never experienced the original event themselves.

A 2024 review published in the journal Life confirms that PTSD and trauma responses are not only linked to personal experiences. They can be inherited from family trauma through measurable changes in DNA. These changes affect the body’s stress response system, fear regulation, and nervous system baseline.

One of the most powerful examples comes from Holocaust survivor research. A 2025 study published in Nature’s Scientific Reports found that the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Holocaust survivors had measurable differences in their stress response biology compared to people with no family history of that trauma. The original suffering had reorganised how descendants’ bodies respond to threat, even generations later.

And a comprehensive 2026 review in Frontiers in Psychiatry, drawing on 35 years of research; confirmed that trauma changes passed through generations have been found across many communities. Including Holocaust survivors, Rwandan genocide survivors, and indigenous populations around the world.

What does this mean for you?
