Ancestral Healing

Ancestral Healing: When What You Carry Was Never Yours to Begin With

Issue: You have done the work. The therapy, supplements, mindfulness, and the boundaries. But something persists. A heaviness in your chest that does not match your life. The pattern you keep repeating despite knowing better. A vigilance your nervous system will not release, no matter how safe the room.

Problem: Some of what you carry was never yours. Research now confirms what indigenous healing traditions have always known: trauma, survival strategies and emotional patterns can be passed through the generations. They are encoded in gene expression, nervous system wiring and cellular memory. Your body may be running a programme written by your grandmother’s grief, your great-grandmother’s silence, or the survival strategies of women in your lineage who learned that being visible meant being in danger.

Solution: Ancestral healing through the Alkymia Method™ works on three levels simultaneously. Biological: supporting the organs where inherited stress is stored. Nervous system: releasing the hypervigilance and threat patterns that were inherited rather than learned. Energetic and ancestral: clearing the karmic imprints, mother-line patterns and persecution wounds held in the lineage field.

Key insight: Your ancestors did not endure so you could repeat their limitations. They survived so you could thrive. When you heal the inherited pattern, the healing ripples backward through the lineage and forward into the generations that follow.

The Weight You Cannot Explain

You feel it in your chest when someone raises their voice. That familiar tightness that seems to come from nowhere.

Your stomach churns before family gatherings. Shoulders carry tension that does not belong to your daily stress. You have tried everything to heal, and something deeper lingers. It whispers that you are not enough, that change is dangerous, that stepping into your power will cost you everything.

This is not a flaw in your coping. Nor is not anxiety you failed to manage. This is ancestral memory, stored in your organs, carried in your cells, passed down through generations as an invisible inheritance.

The most important thing to understand about it is this: it is not yours.

Not all of it, not the oldest, heaviest layers of it. The vigilance that will not switch off. A pattern of over-giving that feels impossible to change. The fear of visibility that grips your throat every time you try to speak your truth. These have a source, and that source is often older than your own story.

Ancestral healing begins with that recognition. You are not broken, but you are carrying.

If you recognise yourself here, you may also be experiencing chronic fatigue that rest does not fix, where ancestral imprinting is one of the four root causes. Or the  good girl pattern, where inherited over-responsibility meets autoimmune self-attack. These are not separate conditions. They are expressions of the same inherited field.

The Science of Inherited Patterns

This is not metaphysical thinking. It is measurable biology.

Epigenetics is the study of how our genes get switched on or off without changing the DNA itself. Research has shown that stress, trauma and hardship can leave chemical marks on our genes, and those marks can be passed to our children and grandchildren.

A 2025 study published in Nature’s Scientific Reports found that the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Holocaust survivors had measurable differences in their stress response biology compared to people with no family history of that trauma. The original suffering had reorganised how descendants’ bodies respond to threat, even generations later.

A comprehensive 2026 review in Frontiers in Psychiatry, drawing on 35 years of research, confirmed that trauma changes passed through generations have been found across many communities worldwide, including Holocaust survivors, Rwandan genocide survivors, and indigenous populations.

And the JAMA study that mapped over 100,000 people found a significant link between stress-related disorders and the later development of autoimmune disease, confirming that inherited stress does not just affect mood. It affects the immune system itself.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, one in five Australians report high or very high levels of psychological distress. What epigenetic research asks us to consider is how much of that distress was inherited rather than created by current circumstances.

What the science currently confirms in humans is three to four generations of epigenetic inheritance. Many shamanic and indigenous traditions speak of healing across seven, fourteen or more generations. I honour that as the lived tradition it is, while grounding my clinical work in what the science can measure. Both ways of knowing point in the same direction: your body carries more than your own story.

For the full peer-reviewed research on transgenerational inheritance, including the piano analogy that explains how epigenetics works in plain language, the Release Ancestral Trauma post covers the science in depth.

How Ancestral Patterns Live in Your Body

Ancestral patterns do not live in the mind. They live in the body. In the organs, the fascia, the nervous system, the cellular memory. This is why talk therapy alone often cannot reach them, and why a woman can understand her pattern perfectly and still find herself repeating it. Understanding lives in the thinking brain. The pattern lives deeper.

Here is where I most commonly find ancestral material stored in the women I work with:

The liver. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the liver holds anger, frustration and the energy of plans that were never allowed to unfold. Women with strong ancestral patterns of suppression often present with liver congestion, hormonal disruption and the 3am waking pattern that signals the liver’s peak processing hour. If you wake between 1am and 3am, your liver may be processing more than last night’s dinner. It may be processing generations of unexpressed truth. The Spring and the Wood Element post explores this organ-emotion connection in the context of seasonal healing.

The gut. The gut produces roughly 90% of the body’s serotonin and houses 70% of the immune system. It is also deeply sensitive to inherited stress. When the nervous system has been set to threat mode across generations, the gut responds with inflammation, food sensitivities and the gut-brain disruption that shows up as brain fog, anxiety and the inability to trust your own knowing.

The throat. The persecution wound, the inherited memory that speaking your truth is dangerous, lives in the throat. Thyroid problems, chronic throat clearing, the sensation of a lump that is not there, difficulty swallowing. In my clinical experience, these often point to a lineage of women who were silenced, and a body that is still obeying the instruction to stay quiet.

The adrenals and kidneys. In TCM, the kidneys hold ancestral essence, the Jing, the deepest energy you were born with. Women running ancestral survival programmes often present with adrenal depletion that does not respond to rest, because the depletion is not caused by this life’s demands. It is caused by a nervous system that inherited the instruction to never stand down. The Winter and the Water Element post explores kidney Qi and ancestral restoration in the context of seasonal healing.

“Your body is not betraying you. It is remembering. When you help it tell the difference between then and now, between their danger and your safety, the patterns that have run for generations can finally complete.”

The Mother Line: What Was Passed Down Without Words

Of all the ancestral channels, the mother line carries the deepest imprint.

This is both energetic and biological. Your mitochondrial DNA, the energy-producing blueprint inside every cell, is inherited exclusively from your mother, who inherited it from hers, in an unbroken maternal chain. When we talk about mitochondrial healing, we are literally working with the mother line at the cellular level.

But the inheritance also happens during pregnancy. You began as an egg inside your mother’s body while she was inside your grandmother’s body. Three generations, nested. Whatever your grandmother experienced during her pregnancy with your mother. Her stress, grief, fear, and joy was part of the hormonal and energetic environment in which the egg that became you was formed.

This is why so many women carry patterns they cannot trace to their own childhood. The pattern came before their childhood. It was already in the egg.

In my clinic, the mother-line patterns I see most often are: the instruction to be good, compliant and self-sacrificing, passed down as love but experienced as a cage. The fear that success or visibility will attract punishment. The belief that rest is laziness and receiving is selfish. And the deepest one: the conviction that being a woman with gifts, with perception, with power, is dangerous.

That last pattern has a name.

The Witch Wound and the Fear of Being Seen

If you are a healer, intuitive, empath or sensitive woman who holds space and speaks truth, and you feel the pull to be more visible but still hold back, this section is for you.

The witch wound is the inherited memory of persecution. For centuries being a woman with gifts meant danger. The women in our lineage learned that hiding was survival, and those strategies were passed down through DNA, through the nervous system, and through the cells.

I know this wound personally. I grew up as a migrant child, learning early that being visible meant being vulnerable. I spent a decade in pathology laboratories hiding the healer behind the scientist. And in my own maternal line, the pattern runs deep: women with perception who learned that the safest version of themselves was the quietest one.

The healing of the witch wound is not about pushing through the fear. It is about helping the nervous system understand that the danger has ended. That being seen, in this lifetime, in this body, is safe. The Vitality, Value and Visibility post explores this in depth, and Friday the 13th: Reclaiming the Sacred Feminine traces the ancestral roots of this suppression. The Canvas Rebel interview shares the personal story of what it cost me to hide half of myself for twenty years.

The Phoenix Threshold: Identity, Grief and Becoming

There is a specific moment in ancestral healing that I call the phoenix threshold. It is the point where the old identity, the one built on inherited patterns, begins to die, and the new one has not yet fully formed.

This threshold is disorienting. It can feel like depression, like loss of purpose, like the ground has been pulled away. Women at this point often say “I do not know who I am anymore,” and they mean it literally. The roles, the coping strategies, the beliefs about herself that were handed down through the lineage are dissolving, and what remains feels raw and unfamiliar.

This is not breakdown. It is the phoenix transformation, and it follows a pattern as old as the myth itself: death, dissolution, rebirth. The Lunar Eclipse post explores how eclipse energy amplifies this emotional release, and the Chiron in Taurus transit offers an eight-year window for restoring trust in the body that emerges on the other side.

The grief at this threshold is real and needs to be honoured. You are grieving the woman you were told to be. And you are grieving on behalf of the women in your line who never got to grieve at all.

In my clinical experience, when a woman allows herself to grieve fully at the phoenix threshold, rather than pushing through or medicating it away, two things happen. Her nervous system settles in a way that months of regulation techniques could not achieve. And her body begins to release patterns it has held for decades. Sometimes as a healing crisis. Sometimes as a profound and quiet letting go.

The phoenix does not push through the fire. She surrenders to it. And what emerges is not a repaired version of the old self. It is someone new.

The Medicine Woman's Approach to Ancestral Healing

In my clinical practice, ancestral healing is never a single modality. It is three levels of work held together and paced to what the nervous system can handle.

Biological restoration. The organs that hold ancestral material need physical support. Liver herbs such as milk thistle and dandelion root for detoxification and hormonal clearance. Gut restoration to rebuild the serotonin pathway and calm the inflammatory cascade. Adrenal and kidney support to replenish the Jing. Nervous system nutrients including magnesium, B vitamins, and adaptogenic herbs. The Spring Detox and 3 Day Gut Cleanse protocols support this layer practically.

Nervous system recalibration. Ancestral patterns live in the autonomic nervous system as default settings. The body does not tell the difference between a threat that happened to your grandmother and a threat happening to you. Both trigger the same survival response. Through somatic practices, vagus nerve work and nervous system reset protocols, we help the body learn the difference between then and now. This is body work, and it unfolds at the pace of the nervous system, not the mind.

Energetic and ancestral clearing. As a shamanic healer with Chilean and Italian ancestral roots, I work directly with the lineage field. This includes clearing karmic patterns passed through the maternal and paternal lines. Releasing persecution wounds that make visibility feel dangerous. Reclaiming ancestral gifts encoded in the DNA but blocked by inherited trauma. And restoring sacred agreements between you and your highest ancestral guides. This is energy alchemy at its deepest level.

When all three levels shift together, the cells receive a new blueprint. The body stops running the old programme and begins to rebuild from a pattern of safety, sovereignty and wholeness rather than survival.

Communicating With Your Ancestors

Ancestral healing is not only about releasing what was harmful. It is also about reclaiming what was beautiful.

Your lineage carries gifts as well as wounds. Resilience, perception, creativity and the capacity to endure and to love fiercely. The intuition that runs through you like a river. When the wound layers are cleared, the gifts often emerge with startling clarity.

Communicating with your ancestors is a practice as old as human culture. Through daily prayer, meditation, creation of art, music, food and ceremony, the ancestor spirits can communicate, guide, protect and heal the living. The Ancestral Equinox Ritual offers a specific seasonal ceremony for this work, and the Spring Rebirth Ritual connects ancestral intention with the elemental energy of renewal.

Your ancestors include your family lineage, the spirits of the land you live on, and your soul tribe. Each offers unique wisdom, and connecting with them can transform the past and heal future generations.

In my clinical work, I often guide women through somatic ancestral dialogue, a practice where you lie quietly, focus on areas of tension or discomfort, and ask those spaces: whose story are you holding? What surfaces, without judgement or force, is often the beginning of the deepest healing a woman will experience.

Your Personalised Path Forward

Every woman’s ancestral pattern is unique, and the path to healing it must honour that uniqueness. In my clinical practice, ancestral healing involves:

A comprehensive assessment of your current symptoms, nervous system state, and the patterns you recognise from your family line. You do not need to know your full genealogy. Your body already holds the map.

Targeted biological support for the organs carrying the inherited load, personalised to your constitution and your capacity.

Somatic and energetic work to release what the body has been holding, at the pace your nervous system can integrate.

Ancestral clearing and lineage work to address the patterns at their source, honouring both the wounds and the gifts your lineage carries.

And ongoing support as the new blueprint settles, because ancestral healing is not a single session. It is a journey, and it deserves companionship.

“When you heal an ancestral pattern, you do not just free yourself. The healing moves backward through the women who carried it and forward into the daughters who would have inherited it. You become the one in the line who said: this ends with me.”
— Mariangela Parodi, Naturopath and Energy Healer

If you sense that what you are carrying is older than your own story, you do not have to untangle it alone.

I work with women across Australia and internationally, online and in person in Hobart. Every session is unhurried, trauma-informed and paced to what your nervous system can hold.
