The pineal gland is known as the third eye and is a pea-sized gland shaped like a pine cone, and located at the centre of the brain which supports health and wellbeing. The pineal gland produces and secretes melatonin, a serotonin-derived hormone responsible for regulating the body’s biorhythms, our sleep-wake cycles, hunger and thirst, sexual desire, and the aging process.

In the Hindu tradition, the third eye is called the ajna chakra, and when blocked it leads to: Uncertainty, confusion, jealousy, cynicism, and pessimism. When the third eye is open, we perceive reality differently, and have clarity, intuition, imagination, empathy, focus, decisiveness and healthy wellbeing.

Here are 7 key to unblock and activate the third eye

#1: Meditation
Studies have shown that mediation activates the pineal gland. As it is sensitive to the bioelectrical signals of light and dark in its environment. Meditation can activate this bioelectric energy, by directing the focus to the pineal gland, stimulating and helping it open.

Third eye meditation:
1. Sit in a comfortable, relaxed posture.
2. Close your eyes.
3. Allow your breath to become deep and slow.
4. Rest your attention on the third eye region just above and between your two eyes.
5. Imagine that you’re breathing a golden white light through the centre of your third eye.

The key is to remain relaxed and avoid trying to force the exercise. Let go of wanting or expecting any result as this will create tension that will block the flow of energy in this process. You’ll know your third eye meditation is working when you begin to feel either a slight pressure in this region or a pulsating sensation.

#2: Crystal work
Place a crystal over the third eye while lying down will activate the dormant energy. Crystals with indigo and violet hues are recommended, and clear quartz will always help to amplify their properties. Some other good options include amethyst, lapis lazuli, iolite, moldavite, sodalite and moonstone. Leave the stone between your eyebrows during meditation for 15 to 30 minutes.

#3: Natural remedies
These remedies can physically stimulate the pineal gland stimulation: Gotu kola, boron, alfalfa sprouts, parsley, oregano oil, sea moss, neem oil, blue-green algae, spirulina, coconut oil, walnuts, iodine, chlorophyll rich foods, beets, apple cider vinegar, lemon water, turmeric, and ginseng.

#4: Aromatherapy
Introduce essential oils to your home, bath, and body, subtle fragrances can work wonders for opening, cleansing, and balancing your sixth chakra- 3rd eye, consider trying one or a combination of these essential oils: Sandalwood, frankincense, myrrh, clary sage, helichrysum, pine, mugwort, grapefruit and nutmeg.

#5: Nurture your creativity
Let your creativity flow freely by focusing on specific activities or activating your imagination. Learn a new art or craft and awaken your inspiration, as it helps you move from the rational mind and mental chatter to open up new possibilities and new ways of thinking. This helps your third eye expand and unfold.

#6: Grounding
By opening the third eye gradually, supported by a reliable foundation that is connected to the earth, is an essential practise for discernment and clarity. When we have enough energy running through our whole body and energetic system this opens the subtle channels of perception in a healthy way. Being grounded and having enough energy allows us to expand into subtle dimensions of perception. It can help us open unhindered and avoid the common negative symptoms of third eye opening, such as feeling disoriented or confused.

#7: Yoga for the third eye chakra
The benefits of yoga are important to bring the breath, focus, and physical movement together, are great tools for cleansing and balancing the chakras. To open and strengthen the Ajna chakra, try these yoga poses:

• Hero (Virasana)
• Standing Half Forward Bend (Ardha Uttanasana)
• Child’s Pose (Balasana)
• Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
• Supported Shoulderstand (Salamba Sarvangasana)
